Learn More

The Stevens Square Development Committee, after completing a commercial needs study, identified the lack of veterinary services in the neighborhood. Many residents of this area, which is located just south of downtown Minneapolis, rely on public transportation and need a local veterinary clinic within walking distance as well as a pet food and supply site.

Some of the committee members approached their own veterinarian, Minnehaha Animal Hospital (MAH) in south Minneapolis, to bring these much-needed services to the neighborhood. Dr. Joyce Tesarek, the owner of Minnehaha Animal Hospital at the time, worked with the committee and Steve Gallagher, the Stevens Square Executive Director, and Pet Doctors came to be.

In 2010, Pet Doctors settled on a site on Nicollet and Franklin Avenues, technically in the Whittier neighborhood, but our convenient location allows us to serve downtown Minneapolis, as well as the Loring, Stevens Square, and Whittier communities.

We tailor each pet’s health care to his or her individual needs. Young cats or dogs will need core vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and training. Sporting dogs and active outdoor pets have special nutritional requirements and may need additional vaccinations to keep them safe. Your older four-legged friends may need help with managing arthritis and other chronic diseases, as well as behavioral changes. Pet Doctors unleashes health care, focusing it on our patients and clients, not just on procedures and processes. Pet Doctors makes health care work.

We are partnered with Minnehaha Animal Hospital to provide a full team of doctors for consultation.  Pet Doctors is a full service hospital with  technologies of digital imaging (X-Ray), full surgical suite, ultrasound,  dental suite and dental radiography.

We manage your pet’s healthcare with electronic medical records, and can email or text correspondence. Our state-of-the-art in-house lab allows same day results for many tests.

For busy people who find it difficult to schedule during the weekday, we offer evening and weekend appointments.

For your convenience, Pet Doctors provides a selection of healthy food options, toys for exercise and entertainment to keep your pet’s body and brain healthy, leashes, collars, carriers, beds and litter supplies for daily needs.

We offer boarding for cats in private deluxe “rooms with an ocean view” overlooking our lovely aquarium.

We are passionate about providing the best care possible for your pet! Come visit us for:

  • 20-40 minute appointment times with the doctor
  • Technician appointment times for vaccine boosters, nail trims, heartworm blood tests and other laboratory work
  • Veterinary care for sick pets and wellness programs tailored to each pet’s age and lifestyle

Adult Wellness Care

A yearly wellness exam for pets one to six years of age is essential to keep your pet healthy. For comparison, this is the equivalent of visiting your own doctor every 7 years. At the appointment, a thorough history is collected to see how your pet is doing, and the veterinarian will ask about any problems or changes you have…

Pet Dentistry

Proper dental care plays a critical role in a pet’s overall comfort and heath. A build-up of plaque contains thousands of bacteria that can enter the pet’s bloodstream and lead to heart, kidney and liver disease, and infected teeth are painful. It is amazing how quickly tartar can collect in your pet’s mouth, particularly on their back teeth.

Senior Wellness Care

Pets often hide symptoms of disease, and a physical exam along with a thorough history can help us identify problems, diagnose diseases and make recommendations for a treatment plan. Early detection of medical conditions allows us to cure or manage a disease for a better outcome for the pet, and a savings of health care costs.

Hospice Care & Euthanasia

There may come a time in your pet’s life when specific treatment of a disease or condition is no longer an option. This could be for a financial reason or because there are no treatments that would benefit your pet. In the advanced stages of diseases such as cancer, kidney failure, or neurological disorders, sometimes treatments cause pets pain or…

Puppy & Kitten Wellness

When puppies and kittens are born, their mothers pass on some natural immunity to diseases. As they grow, the antibodies slowly diminish. They require multiple vaccinations to keep the antibodies at a safe level, protecting their little bodies. Depending on the age that your puppy/kitten starts their vaccinations, a veterinarian will determine how many they receive.

Pet Surgery

Every pet should have some permanent identification. Any pet can lose their collar, open a gate or even your happy house cat could slip out the door. Protect them! With a simple injection, a microchip can be placed to give your pet a safe, reliable, and permanent pet ID. Lost pets with microchips are up to 20 times more likely…

Does my indoor cat need a rabies vaccine?

Yes, indoor cats still need a rabies vaccine. Rabies is a fatal disease that can be transmitted to humans, and vaccination is required by law in many areas.

Why can’t I just get preventive medication or a prescription refill without a current exam?

A current exam is required to ensure your pet’s health status has not changed and that the prescribed medication is still appropriate. This is part of maintaining a valid Veterinary-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR).

Why does my dog need a heartworm test?

A heartworm test is necessary to ensure your dog does not have heartworms before starting or continuing preventive medication. Administering preventive medication to a dog with heartworms can lead to serious health complications.

What does it mean to establish care?

Establishing care means creating a Veterinary-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR), which involves regular visits and exams to ensure your pet receives consistent and comprehensive care.

Why do we require yearly exams?

Yearly exams help monitor your pet’s health, detect any changes or early signs of illness, and provide preventative care to keep your pet healthy.

Why do we test yearly for heartworm and tick-borne diseases?

Annual testing for heartworm and tick-borne diseases is crucial for early detection and treatment, ensuring your pet stays healthy and preventing serious health issues.

What Our Pet Parents Say

I’ve been using Pet Doctors for the last 7 years and can’t say enough great things about them. My dog, Potato is very anxious during his visits but they are SO good with him. The whole team is always positive, calm and patient. Communication is super fast and I love that they have a text line. I recommend Pet Doctors to all my friends

Elien

Everyone here is always so kind. I’ve had to call with questions about my dog eating things she shouldn’t and they’ve always been patient with me when I am a crying mess on the phone. And the attention and care during appointments is lovely!
